DID YOU KNOW?
that… it is possible to consult the Land Register?
This provides the names of property owners since registration, the
rights attached to the property or rights it is subject to (such as
footpaths), and details of mortgages (such as the name of the bank). A
search for a property can be done through the HM Land Registry’s
website,
www.landregisteronline.gov.uk using the title number or address. If
the property has been sold since 1st April 2000 it should be possible to
download copies of the title register and title plan for a small fee.
There are limitations though as the records only begin from when the
property was first registered and few were registered before 1920.
Although the register does not contain genealogical information as such,
documents produced as a result of changes in ownership, since
registration, are retained. The Land Registry advises that you write a
letter outlining details of the property in which you are interested,
and as much information as you can provide with respect to approximate
dates of purchase and sale etc. They will then see if there is any
documentation that they can provide. |
RADIO KENT
In December 2004 BBC
Radio Kent, in conjunction with BBC2s "Who do you think you
are?", ran an open day at
The Institute of Heraldic and
Genealogical Studies in Canterbury. The webmaster was
lucky enough to attend and meet the Radio Kent presenter Julie Maddocks
and her team and the researchers at the Institute. They were able to
help me with my research and were also very interested in some of the
documents and records I had compiled in my travels. I was also
interviewed for BBC Radio Kent.
I am trying to find out if my great grandfather was a Freeman of the
City of London but progress is slow at the moment. My grandmother was born in New York and I have recently
received a copy of her birth certificate from The
New York City Records
Office for a little over £10. Received it in about 3 weeks as well,
quicker than ordering one for my great, great grandfathers marriage from
the UK! It is recommended that you find the reference number of the
certificate you need and check your details carefully first by using
Ancestry.Com or similar.
