From Roy Victor Hobbs, I was born in West Farleigh on 2nd March 1942 in the
middle of the three Ewell Manor cottages. My father and my three brothers were
all born in the village. I lived there until about 1952. If I can assist anyone
I will. My father was the chief stockman for Captain H. R.
Landale who lived in Ewell Manor until his death in about 1950. His youngest
daughter Jean married the son who was to become Lord Cornwallis. When Capt.
Landale died his son in law took over the administration of the estate and the
manor was demolished I expect for death duties.
The barn on the estate was used in the 1940s for whist
drives and was lit and warmed by oil lamps. My brother was born in 1928 in one
of the Ewell Court lodges. I was told of a Mr. PHILPOTT who was the butler at
the manor in the 1930s and I believe jumped off Teston bridge, his body was
recovered downstream.
My father worked with an EDDIE SMITH who lived in St.
Helens Lane until he hanged himself in the outside toilet in the 1940s. I also
remember Mr. DOVE running the post office until its closure; it was at the
bottom of Ewell Manor Lane.
I would like information regarding my paternal grandmother
ELIZABETH HOBBS, Nee ONLEY or ONGLEY, who lived in Smiths Hill Cottages around
1900. |
