FRENCH

From Jill Noyes - I'm hoping to find information on 4 families from East and West Farleigh, FRENCH, GREEN, BUTCHER and HICKS. My primary interest is in the FRENCH family, particularly the parents of John FRENCH (b. about 1819) who married Ann Frances Connell (nee GREEN - the daughter of Joseph and Margaret Green).

John (my maternal great grandfather) was a 'fruiter and farmer' and for some years lived in Gallants Lane at 'Pear Tree Farm'. I know they had 7 children between 1845 and 1867, but unfortunately I can't find any information on John's parents, so connections to that family would be appreciated. I would also love to be able to pinpoint the location of Pear Tree Farm, but despite invaluable help from local libraries searching through old maps and a relative driving up and down Gallants Lane innumerable times I am unable to do so, so any information on its possible location would also be appreciated.

David FRENCH (b. 21.9.1860) the penultimate child of John and Ann Frances, was my great grandfather. He subsequently married Louisa Jane MASTERS and had 8 children, (the youngest of which was my maternal grandfather) four of whom were born in East and West Farleigh. My paternal grandmother Winifred BUTCHER was born on 8th Aug. 1898 at No. 4 St. Helens Cottages, St. Helens Lane, the youngest child and only daughter of James BUTCHER and Harriet (nee TOMPSETT). I am interested in finding more about her two brothers Charles (born about 1873) and Frederick (born about 1878) at least one of whom I believe served in the Boer War.

And finally ... I'm searching for information on the parents and wife of William HICKS (born about 1791). According to the IGI his daughter Elizabeth was baptised on 15. 10. 1826 and subsequently married Charles Butcher as above. Although Elizabeth appears to have been baptised in Yalding, I believe her Father was born in Farleigh, so any information on his parents or wife would be welcomed.

If anyone has knowledge or information on these families I would be most grateful to hear from them, any suggestions as to where Pear Tree Farm may have been would also be appreciated as would copies of any old photographs of East and/or West Farleigh.

In conclusion I would just like to say that opportunities to post requests such as this are rare, and for that, West Farleigh Parish, I thank you. Jill Noyes
