Bryan
was born and lived all his life in Kent which is also known as the
Garden of England. He lives and works in the tiny hamlet of West
Farleigh which has a population of around 400 and is situated
approximately three miles west of Maidstone with magnificent views over
the River Medway Valley and the North Downs.
He
is qualified as a joiner and has spent the majority of his working life
in this pursuit, but more recently has concentrated on woodturning,
which has always been his passion.
Bryan
is a member of the "Association of Wood Turners of Great
Britain" |
Bryan
has tended to concentrate on the artistic side of turning, preferring to
produce medium to large pieces for display, rather than on the smaller
practical aspect of turning such as kitchenware, although he will always
produce these items if requested.

He
is best known for his work with spalted timbers which are timbers that
have been attacked by fungus normally after felling, when the timber is
wet and not dried in a controlled environment. Trees such as Sycamore,
Beech and Maple are particularly subject to this attack and after
|
turning
and finishing with oils or polish produce stunning grain colourings,
ranging from black to blue to orange, red and yellow thus enhancing
the natural grain of the timber and producing intricate lines that
appear to have been placed there by the draughtsman's pen.

A
large proportion of his material has been sourced from trees that were
destroyed during the two hurricanes that devastated Kent during the
1980's and he feels that he is breathing new life back into these trees
by producing beautiful pieces.
